We Are Back

We had a wonderful holiday in Slovenia and Austria, but now we are back in business with loads of sunshine in our pockets! Bring it on, Finland. We celebrated vappu, 1st May, in a traditional wintery atmosphere.

We visited multiple museums, but Belvedere with the marvelous Klimt masterpieces was unforgettable.

More about the vacay soon!

Postcards from Ljubljana

Travel throwback to a beautiful day last June, wandering around Ljubljana.

You shouldn’t miss Metelkova (above) if you visit Ljubljana. It’s an autonomous cultural center, and due to the autonomous aspect people have compared it to Christiania in Copenhagen. There you can find art spaces, concerts, bars and of course a lot of interesting details already in the buildings.

Rog is another alternative sort of place in Ljubi, with its art spaces and skateparks. It used to be a bike factory, then it was abandoned and squatted, and last summer it was supposed to be demolished. So I stumbled upon a situation when I walked there, with a lot of spectators and construction workers and police officers. Apparently at the moment the demolition is in halt, waiting for a legal process.

Dragon Bridge. Dragon is also part of the City of Ljubljana’s coat of arms.

Another surprising element of the day was this peacock in the center of the city!

There was a “little sister” of Flow Festival Helsinki (highly recommended) in Ljubljana a couple of years ago.

As you can see, Ljubljana is a beautiful place. And as I was mostly there for short periods of time, I would really like to go again with enough time to really get to know it.

Venezia Photo Diary

Valentine’s day is tomorrow, so I would like to share something romantic: pictures from our long weekend in Venice. The trip was special, because it was our first holiday with just the two of us.

Fun fact: in Finnish Valentine’s day is called ystävänpäivä, friend’s day, and it has been traditionally a celebration of friendships in general, not just romantic love stuff.

David spent Christmas 2015 in Amsterdam and he was flying there from Venice, so we decided to combine a romantic vacay to this. We took a super early GoOpti from Maribor and when we reached “the city of masks” it was still morning. Efficient!

We were staying in Generator hostel on the island of Giudecca. The hostel was very stylish but unfortunately I have a strong feeling they got bed bugs – weird spots ocurred.

Then the weirdest thing happened. The sun disappeared to a thick fog in a really short time. I didn’t think the atmosphere could have been any more magical than what it already was but the fog did the trick. (Btw, funny how many pictures of drying laundry there happens to be…)

In Venice we just walked. Walked for hours. Got lost. It was wonderful. Even for me, a map maniac, it was difficult to keep track on our whereabouts because the city is a labyrinth. Then we ended up in cute places like the one above, Serra dei Giardini, café in a greenhouse.

Venice had its touristy parts, but it was also amazingly beautiful and mysterious. It was so nice to just sit in a café on a side of a plaza, sip espresso and watch stylish ol’ pops and mamas going about their days with small dogs and big gestures.

My suggestions: walk as much as you can, just wander around and marvel the special surroundings – preferably holding hands. ♥
